"Sunrise" by Derek J. Oquendo Acevedo

In the beginning, darkness reigned over the Earth and Moon. Since light was not created yet, you could see the Earth and Moon as two similar spheres. One was bigger than the other, but you could not see any additional details. Just two spheres dancing with each other endlessly until the end of times. Suddenly, a voice was heard from the distance, “It is not good for the shadows to prevail, let there be light.” And so, the Sun was born. The light reached the Moon and achieved its purpose; the Moon began to shine beautifully. Earth saw the Moon shine with glory and was astonished by the blessing that he had all this time without knowing. However, the Moon did not have the same idea as Earth. By the Moon’s eyes, she thought that the Earth was disgusted by her appearance, after all, who thinks that craters are beautiful? And so, the waning Moon hid in front of the Sun, and she began to dim until darkness reigned over her again. The Sun watched everything and was troubled deep in his core, and after thinking about his words carefully, he approached the Moon. With a warm and tender voice, he said to the Moon: “You know, the reason why I was created, was for you to embrace the light, not hide from it.” These words entered the Moon’s core; from being comfortable in the darkness, she now began to feel uneasy, her core was troubled. With the tiny bravery that she had left, the new Moon commenced to move away from the Sun, little by little, she began to shine again, her glowing was crescent until it reached its fullness. The Earth looked at her companion, and said to her: “You look full, full of blessings.”

–So… let me get this straight, you bring me into the town square, and we are now sitting on a lonely bench, looking at each other, so you can poetically tell me, how the phases of the Moon work? Am I right?

–You don’t get it.

–What do you mean?

–My dear, I am the Sun, you are the Moon, and the people of the world are the Earth. The craters of the Moon are your so called “horrendous” body parts. You see, you don’t need to hide your “disgusting” features, those features are the ones that make you shine. I’m here to share my light with you, to show you the blessing that you are. Of course, you don’t need me for you to have a plentiful life, you only need the one who created you, but I’m going to speak from the bottom of my heart. My dear… let me be your Sun, and let yourself be my full Moon. Dear, let’s complement each other, but you have to give me a chance, I can’t force you.

A brief silence arose; she was speechless. Seconds passed away and the young girl looked at the young boy intensely without knowing how to act. Then, she remembered, she said to the boy, “Wait here.” He accepted her request; minutes passed away and she did not appear. He was becoming impatient, anxious, and worried for his beloved. An hour went flying, and finally, the girl returned. She sat close to the boy, closer than ever before, and said to him: “Look, I don’t know if our relationship is going to work out, but here, it’s for you… your favorite flower.” She gifted him a beautiful sunflower; he was perplexed, and astonished, but full of joy and hope. After the boy received the flower, she said to him: “Now, it’s my turn to tell you a story.”

The boy with joy in his heart, looked at her beautifully blueish painted eyes and listened with great delight.

–Before the Sun was created and the Moon began to shine, life on Earth was dependent on the light that the Creator emitted by himself. Somewhere at the end of the Earth, there was a cave. In that cave lived the only sunflower on Earth.

The girl paused for a second and addressed the boy:

–From now on, I’m going to address the flower as a “she”. Is that fine with you?

–Sure.

–The cave was dark and gloomy, light was fantasy, darkness reality. She was no different, her petals were blue, and she would always face her head down. Her leaves would fall apart, and her roots were dim. There was an instance in her life where she would move her head and body in search of fantasy, but as time passed away, and the seconds became minutes, minutes became hours, hours transformed into days and the days into weeks, and weeks into months, she became desperate until finally she gave up all the hope she had left. And so, there she was now… on her last day on Earth. An old idea reached her mind, she thought that for the last time, she would try to find the one thing that she was looking for. After all, who could blame her, it was her last day, trying wouldn’t hurt, right? Therefore, with the little strength she had left, she faced her head to the ceiling of the cave, where the stalactites were born and fed her with drops of water. Looking for the one thing that she needed she heard a voice from the distance: “It is not good for the shadows to prevail, let there be light.” At that moment, a huge earthquake hit the cave and the ceiling fell apart, however, it did not damage the flower. The Sun was born, and light was a reality. The light achieved its purpose, and when the sunflower felt the light on her body, her petals turned yellow, leaves began to grow from her stem and her roots were crescent as ever before. She was now full of life, and blessing.

–You just said more or less the same thing as me, but with other words

–You don’t get it.

–What do you mean then?

–The meaning is different. My dear, there’s a lot of meaning for what I just said, but

I can summarize it for you in these simple words. Dear, since the moment I met you, you have always been my Sun.
