Puerto Rican Reading Marathon 2025

The annual Literature Marathon, sponsored by the library, welcomed students from Pre-K to 9th grade, celebrating stories, creativity, and community. A highlight of the event was a joyful visit from Remi the Clown, who brought laughter and inspiration to students, guests, and faculty alike.

Students from the English Student Association (ESA) and the Children’s Literature course (INGL 4326) proudly presented a tribute to Pura Belpré, the first Puerto Rican librarian, through a lively performance of her folktale “Señor Billy Goat”, found in her collection The Tiger and the Rabbit and Other Tales.

Daliana Quinones, ESA President, opened with a brief biography of Belpré, honoring her legacy in Puerto Rican literature. ESA members brought the story to life with simple costumes and a student-designed backdrop, portraying the following characters:

  • Narrator – Elaine

  • Old Man – Dereck

  • Old Woman – Génesis

  • Billy Goat – Giancarlos

  • Ant – Deyaneira

Their performance was a beautiful blend of storytelling, culture, and student talent.

Meet and Greet

The Meet and Greet/Open Mic activity held on Sept.18 in the Ocean Lounge, was a smash! Students from various concentrations attended the event which was the first activity held for the fall semester of SY 2025-2026. The English Department faculty supported their students to bring together a new energy for the ESA.

The meeting started with the President, Daliana Quiñones, showing a Power Point of the ESA requirements, our mission, vision and highlights of upcoming events.

Several students found their “voices” and presented original poems, short stories and memoirs—Daliana, Jenismar, Génesis, María Celeste, Sammy, and Kiara .

Refreshments were served.

We invite students to sign up and participate in our academic, social, and cultural activities for the year 2025-2026.
